Commodities - Carbon comeback

The price of emitting carbon fell Tuesday morning but came back up along with German power in the afternoon. Oil prices saw a different scenario as weaker US demand pulled prices down in the afternoon.
In the carbon market, the December 2006 contract opened down at EUR 22.80/allowance on the ICE but finished the day 40 cents higher at 23.20, down 5 cents from Monday. Similar price movements were seen at Nord Pool, where the December 06 contract opened at 22.85 and closed at 23.30 (-0.05).”Some sellers may have tried to push the market down early on, but the market quickly came up

The case for fuel switching seems to have been lost a long time ago, and with the gas prices increasing again on Wednesday, CO2 prices appeared to be kept high by a keen buying interest in a busy session.

Prompt gas prices dropped significantly on Monday, but the curve remained firm further out. Oil moved down, while a weaker fuel complex and a downward adjustment in German power ended the bullish run in CO2 prices.
