The bellwether Q2 11 Nordic power contract has hit a five-week high of EUR 57.95/MWh on Monday, on the back of stronger gas and coal prices following the impact of the Japanese earthquake on nuclear production there.
The contract was last seen at EUR 57.85/MWh, up EUR 1.55 from Friday. "Gas seems to be the main price driver today, as players expect increased demand for LNG from Japan following the nuclear problems [several reactors remain shutdown due to the quake] there. Coal and CO2 is also up, increasing the marginal cost of power production in Europe,” said a Swedish trader.
