Market - No trend, no friend

After yesterday’s surprisingly high system price and consequent lift, the Thursday market fell back several NOKs as the weather outlooks are bearish. And while the GFS remains somewhat hysterically bearish, the EC is more modest. Facts are that only some 40% of average amounts of precipitation have been delivered so far this February, on top of the bad resource balance. Furthermore, without a trend the market remains sensitive and changeable.
Too much Next week does not have expectations near today’s high system price, as temperatures are expected to rise to above normal. The American weather forecast is considered somewhat extreme, but the market seems to follow on down too easily, a Swedish producer said this morning. Today power flow continues to go from Norway to Sweden, and the Swedes are importing new record high loads this morning with temperatures down to –22°C in Stockholm. NVE/Statnett’s request to Norwegian producers to show responsibility regarding the security of supply seems to have been a shot in the dark.

The Friday morning market was bearish as weather forecasts were of good promise for mild weather and precipitation. Today power flow continues to go from Norway to Sweden, and the Swedes are importing new record high loads this morning with temperatures down to –22°C in Stockholm. NVE/Statnett’s request to Norwegian producers to show responsibility regarding the security of supply seems to have been a shot in the dark.

The Wednesday market opened down on more moderate forecasts, but the downward movements lacked momentum and many contracts turned north again before noon. A Swedish trader argued that prices should start rising again soon to adjust to the fundamental deficit while a Norwegian trader said the market was more likely to head south when it breaks out of its current range.
