Market - New records, but nervous

In a thin Wednesday market the Winter1 contract tested the symbolic 400 NOK/MWh level before settling in the same range as yesterday. Most of the contracts traded down early in the morning before recovering towards noon. Fundamentally the situation remains as strained as it has ever been, but the exit door may also be brutally narrow if the trend turns, a Norwegian producer warned.
“We are now reaching record levels, and the fundamental situation doesn’t support a correction. But a correction may come, and when it comes it can be brutal. Twice as brutal as the one we had earlier this autumn when the Winter1 contract fell some 50 NOK/MWh in a few days. This time it may fall 100 NOK/MWh. Market - Showing strength
A very mild and wet EC forecast sparked a correction in the strong bull market this morning which saw V1-03 opening down 14.75 NOK/MWh from yesterday. Too far, the market decided later, and prices have corrected up again throughout the morning underlining its strength. The early correction though show that players are ready to push the market down and an international trader said this morning that its getting ever more nervous.

Weather forecasts pointing in all directions didn’t prevent the market from lifting beyond yesterday’s high. Amounts of precipitation remain well below average despite an extra 2TWh in today’s outlooks, but with a deficit situation close to 30TWh the market remains in a state of bewilderment over the all time high levels. Players argued today that these new levels reflect how problematic the situation has become.
