Market - Gappy New Year

As 2002 has become 2003 the system price has reached a new all time high, fixed at 726.43 NOK/MWh (+68.32) for today. The summer contract has at the same time lifted to the 300 NOK/MWh level, and the high price regime, unsurprisingly, continues with the cold start of the new year. Turnover remains relatively low, however, as volatility is high.
The high system price did not inspire players to take up new, sizable positions this morning and with a prolonged holiday sentiment the Thursday morning market was rather thin. The contracts traded were lifted considerably though, and with the very cold and dry outlooks for the period, no sudden change of the high price scenario in which the new year has started seemed likely this morning.

It was a quiet Friday morning market, and turnover was relatively low. Weather outlooks seemed somewhat milder than yesterday, but the nearest weeks lifted a notch at open nonetheless, while the summer contract remained at yesterday´s level. According to a Norwegian trader the price for next week is realistic. He also argued that with continued cold forecasts Monday and Tuesday, the market is on its way to a 1000 NOK/MWh spot.

In the day-before-Christmas-market turnover was very low, but the weather forecasts and spreads presented bore witness that the high-price scenario may not be over. It is easy to move the market considerably on exceptionally thin volumes, however, and as a result the V1-03 contract was back well above 600 NOK/MWh and SO-03 traded up to 268.00 at the highest.
