With coal prices hitting historic highs above USD 80 per tonne, generators in Europe turned to cheaper gas-fired generation which in turned led to a drop in demand for carbon allowances.
Carbon prices fell on Monday, with many traders saying high coal prices were causing power producers to switch from coal to gas. "The CO2 price is mainly being driven by fuel switching," said one trader. "Demand for EUAs is falling and then prices have to ease.However, another player was not so sure. "At the moment there are simply no impulses," he said, pointing to thin volumes.
