The carbon market headed north yesterday, with the benchmark 2008 contract finishing the day half a euro higher than before the weekend. Oil rallied during the day, but fell late on to settle more or less at the same level as on Friday.
The December 2008 carbon contract opened at EUR 19.00/tonne yesterday, but it gained strength throughout the day and settled at EUR 19.60/tonne, up 54 cents from Friday.Prices were said to go up because of a stronger German power market, where the baseload Cal 08 contract settled up 20 cents at EUR 55.55/MWh at the EEX.
